08-05-24 Collaborating to Optimise Patient Care Thank you to everyone who attended our recent optometrist seminar, co-hosted with Auckland Eye, at our Ormiston clinic. It was a successful turnout, and a great evening! Please see abstracts from our ophthalmologists’ presentations below. Dr Richard Hart: Eyelid Diagnoses Not to Be Missed Commonly-occurring benign eyelid conditions such as chalazion and blepharitis are seen by primary eye-care providers as part of everyday routine practice. When there are atypical clinical features, including an unusual time course, a masquerade condition indicating possible malignancy should be considered in the differential diagnosis. In this situation, prompt referral to an Ophthalmologist is recommended. Two such cases are presented for discussion to highlight features that warrant prompt referral: The dangerous “chalazion” Ulcerative “blepharitis” Dr Clairton de Souza: Vitreous Floaters - Nuisance or Visual Pathology Vitreous floaters are a common entoptic phenomenon that can result in a major burden on the quality of life of a significant proportion of sufferers. We will present the current pathophysiological understanding of myodesopsia, its clinical assessment and management. We will also discuss the interventional outcomes and the risks vs expected benefits of the treatment options for symptomatic vitreous opacities. Dr Sonya Bennett: Diagnosing Glaucoma - Causative Mechanisms Illustrated Through Case Studies Glaucoma diagnosis and management is not always straight forward. Understanding the mechanism for the glaucomatous process is imperative and sometimes there can be a mix of mechanisms causing the glaucomatous change. Several clinical cases will be presented that demonstrate the general principles of checking for the causative mechanisms and the management of the particular mechanism and glaucoma in gene. If you would like to suggest topics for our next seminar, or have any queries please email us on info@cityeye.co.nz We look forward to seeing you at our next City Eye Specialists event soon! Back
