Sonya studied in medicine at Otago University in Dunedin, working in Hawke's Bay after graduating. She trained as an ophthalmologist in Auckland and Hamilton and completed fellowship training in Melbourne at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, and in London at Moorfields Eye Hospital gaining expertise in glaucoma care.

She returned to New Zealand in 2006 and is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Greenlane Clinical Centre Eye Clinic and a Senior Clinical Lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Auckland. Her particular areas of clinical interest are angle closure glaucoma, uveitic glaucoma, paediatric glaucoma, glaucoma drainage surgery, and she is an experienced cataract surgeon. She served a term as a basic sciences examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and has recently been involved in teaching glaucoma techniques to ophthalmologists in south-east Asia.

As an amateur violinist Sonya has always had a love for music and plays regularly with her string quartet. Sonya likes to knit, crochet, ferment food and she is currently dabbling in artisan cheese-making.

Sonya was a founding director of City Eye Specialists in 2007.
