Clairton studied Medicine at the Federal University of Maranhao, Brazil and trained in Ophthalmology at the reputable Brazilian Ophthalmic Centre, Hilton Rocha Eye Institute. Subsequently he concluded a Master in Retina in Spain and completed 3 Vitreoretinal and Cataract Surgical Fellowships in Adelaide, Auckland and Perth. He also did a Clinical Fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis in London at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital. In 2012 he was awarded the PhD degree in Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland. 

He is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Greenlane Clinical Centre Eye Clinic; Clinical Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology and Senior Lecturer in Optometry at the University of Auckland. Clairton is also a member of the Cell and Molecular Biology of the Retina (CMBR) laboratory at the University of Auckland where projects bridging clinical and basic sciences of the retina are conducted. Clinically, Clairton is interested in all aspects of Advanced Vitreoretinal Surgery and has immense satisfaction in improving vision and having a positive impact on his patients’ quality of life.

As a bibliophile, Clairton is interested in Ethics, Religion, History and Philosophy. He also loves interacting with the local community and is actively involved with the Brazilian Adventist Community Church in Orakei.
