Orbit, Eyelid & Lacrimal systems

The orbit is the bony socket that surrounds and protects the eye. It includes the system of muscles which move the eyes when we look at something, the tear production and drainage system (lacrimal system) which lubricate and protect the surface of the eye, and the many critical nerve and blood vessels that help the eye function.

Any of these parts of the eye may be affected by disease and/or certain medical conditions. Ensure that the person assessing and managing your orbital condition is familiar with orbital pathology, orbital imaging and the surgical techniques used to treat these conditions.

The eyelids provide barrier protection for the eye and distribute the tear film over the cornea. The eyelids are part of the face, and diseases that result in altered eyelid position or shape may have a profound effect on an individual’s appearance. Eyelid conditions may be present from birth or may be acquired later in life and include structural problems (eg. cysts), abnormal eyelid position, tumours, infections, trauma and age changes. Treatment of eyelid conditions usually requires the use of specialized techniques such as oculoplastic surgery, which helps restore optimum eyelid function and appearance.
