Richard studied medicine at the University of Auckland and trained as an Ophthalmologist in Auckland and Hamilton.

After completing basic training he worked as a specialist registrar in Oculoplastic Surgery at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom. Richard also undertook two years postgraduate subspecialty Fellowship training in Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery in London at Chelsea & Westminster and Moorfields Eye Hospitals. He has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Greenlane Clinical Centre and a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland since 2004 and his special interests include eyelid, lacrimal and orbital surgery. He is also an experienced cataract surgeon. Richard has served on the Continuing Professional Development and International Development Committees of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Richard participates in clinical research and he is a regular speaker at national and international professional meetings. He is committed to volunteering and has regularly spent time teaching trainee eye surgeons in south-east Asia since 2005. He also has an interest in Aviation Medicine related to Ophthalmology.

Richard was a founding director of City Eye Specialists in 2007.
