Dr Sonya Bennett DR SONYA BENNETT MB ChB, Dip Obst, FRANZCO Ophthalmologist Cataract Surgeon Glaucoma Specialist Sonya studied medicine at Otago University in Dunedin and Christchurch, working in Hawke's Bay after graduating. She trained as an ophthalmologist in Auckland and Hamilton and completed fellowship training in Melbourne at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, and in London at Moorfields Eye Hospital gaining expertise in glaucoma care. She returned to New Zealand in 2006 and is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Greenlane Clinical Centre Eye Clinic and a Senior Clinical Lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Auckland. Her particular areas of clinical interest are angle closure glaucoma, uveitic glaucoma, glaucoma drainage surgery, and she is an experienced cataract surgeon. She served as a basic sciences examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, has been involved in teaching glaucoma techniques to ophthalmologists in south-east Asia and is passionate about teaching ophthalmology to aspiring ophthalmologists. Sonya was a founding director of City Eye Specialists in 2007 and is still closely in involved in its ongoing growth. She has served on the board of Ophthalmology New Zealand for five years and is currently Chair. An amateur violinist for many years, and now more recently a cellist, Sonya has always had a love for music. Sonya accidentally took up Karate a couple of years ago and surprised herself that she enjoys punching and kicking so much! In her spare time she is a wannabe homesteader. Back
