07-12-17 City Eye Seminar Series November 2017 Twice a year City Eye likes to host a seminar series for optometrists and general practitioners. In November City Eye hosted optometrists at both our Symonds Street clinic and in Howick where Drs Sonya Bennett, Richard Hart and Clairton de Souza each presented a talk on an eye-related topic. These Seminars are both a teaching tool and a way to meet with fellow professionals. Dr Bennett presented a talk entitled ‘Ocular Hypertension in the Shared Care Arena’. Ocular hypertension is more often being managed by optometrists now as the increasing aging population is putting more demand on ophthalmologist resources. This talk included “whom to treat” and “when to treat” as well as discussing home IOP monitoring using a patient administered device. Dr Richard Hart’s talk was called ‘Assessment and Early Management of the Patient with Ocular Trauma’. Ocular trauma is one of the most common presentations to primary care, including general practitioners, emergency medical centres and optometrists. Dr Hart presented an overview of the spectrum of ocular and adnexal injuries and their early management. He also discussed current indications for referral and imaging. Dr Clairton de Souza lectured on ‘What to do with large/chronic macular holes?’ Idiopathic macular hole (MH) has considerable prevalence in the adult population (aged ≥ 50) of all ethnic groups and early recognition has important implications for treatment and prognosis. Dr de Souza provided an updated review of the MH treatment options, the importance of clinical and imaging characterization and differential diagnosis, and the rationale for the approach of more complex cases. The talks were all well received and we look forward to hosting more seminars next year! Back
